Catalog Full Description

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program is designed to prepare leaders for the nursing profession who have expertise in advanced nursing practice with an individual specialization. The DNP Program is consistent with the overall mission of the School of Nursing which is to prepare nursing leaders who can facilitate quality health care for our nation. The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track provides nurses with the advanced knowledge and skills necessary to manage the health problems of individuals and families throughout the lifespan in a variety of primary-care settings. Students are prepared to assume leadership in providing quality health promotion, disease prevention, maintenance, and restoration services to families and individuals of all ages and developmental levels in public and private clinics, community health centers, retail health care, school and student health centers, including those providing care to culturally diverse and medically under-served population groups in the San Diego area. Students gain skills in advanced health assessment, clinical decision-making, and case management necessary for practice as FNPs in today’s rapidly changing health care system.

Graduates are eligible to sit for certification as a:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified (FNP-BC) through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), or

  • Family Nurse Practitioner, Certified (FNP-C) through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB)
